Coffee with the Pastor
Downs has a fantastic coffee shop called The Union, along with three great restaurants (Game Day, Lucky 7’s, and Papa G’s) while we’re plugging our local businesses. On Sunday mornings, you’re invited to join the pastor and a small group for coffee at The Union. The discussion is open-topic but also considered to be a part of the Bible Reading Challenge (see below). A section of scripture will feature in the discussion, and then you’re welcome to bring your questions and prayer requests. It is always a great group of people, and a good chance to have fellowship and Christian conversation before the worship service.
The Bible Reading Challenge is simply stated, but a good amount of work to complete: If scripture is the Word of God, then you and I should be reading it for ourselves, not letting others (authors, pastors, pundits, or the history channel) read it for us. We are committed to doing everything we can at Downs UMC to help you in the task of reading scripture because we absolutely believe it is one of the best ways to encounter God. But the books are old, the culture is foreign, and the reading can be challenging (but nowhere near impossible). Our pastor has written a guide for reading scripture that is available for free. It takes you first through the narrative (story driven) portions of the Bible and then on your second pass you’ll read the material you skipped over the first time. Every other Wednesday night (hyperlink to calendar) we meet in the sanctuary from 7-8 PM to discuss scripture. A brief section of scripture will be highlighted and discussed for about 15 minutes, and then the rest of the time it’s open question and discussion. We don’t promise to have all the answers, but we’ll share what we do know, and bonus points if you ask a question so awesome we have to look it up for next week! That’s one of the best ways to learn.
Senior Bible Study
The Senior Bible Study meets in the library Tuesdays at 10:00. Pastor Ken leads the study. He sometimes provides notes for the group, all of which can be found on this page.
What would it be like, if you had a group of people, say 5-10, who were committed, absolutely committed to helping you achieve your faith goals as you grow in Christ? People who are ready to celebrate your wins with you, and ask tough questions in the areas you’ve given permission to do so? And what if you returned that same commitment to them? To pray for them, support them, and in the words of John Wesley “watch over one another in Christian love”? Journey groups are a truly unique ministry here at Downs UMC. It is a place of powerful support in the name of Christ, loving accountability for the goals you choose to share with the group, and prayer support like no other ministry here at Downs. We currently have three groups meeting now:
- Wednesday at 4:00 PM (women only)
- Thursday at 6:00 PM (coed)
Sign up is through the church office, but the door is always open for new members, and we’d love to tell you more about them any time. (See the calendar page for the latest schedule.)
