The Soul Gym Re-Opens! September 19, 6:00 PM
We exercise our bodies, we practice skills for our career, and we train and educate our minds… why do we so often neglect our spirit? The Soul Gym is a chance to both learn and practice four different “spiritual disciplines” in the classic Christian tradition. These are practices and mindsets that have the distinct goal of getting us to a place where we can better experience the presence of God. This session of the Soul Gym will take a look at the spiritual disciplines of: Study, Service, and Celebration as they are taught in Richard Foster’s classic book Celebration of Discipline.
Journey Group Open House, September 22, 6:00 PM
Journey Groups are a program designed by the Downs United Methodist Church after much study of the history of the Methodist movement in America and England. They are Christian accountability groups based on the pattern set by John Wesley to ask one another three questions each week: 1) how are you avoiding harm/sin? 2) what good have you done? 3) what do you do to stay connected to God? The questions are simple, the discussion meaningful, the prayer support is life-changing, and the encouragement of others walking in the journey of faith with you is a profound blessing.
Senior’s Bible Study Open House, September 27, 10:00 AM
This hybrid Bible Study (with some joining online and some in person) meets at the church and will start a new topic for the Open House. We’ll begin studying the book of Exodus together. It will be an action packed story including: the tale of Moses, the origin of the 10 commandments, and all the source material for no less than 5 different Hollywood films! Exodus truly sets the tone for our understanding of how we relate to God, and for the person of Jesus Christ. We have a great group, and have great discussion, and we’d love for you to join us. Not sure if you’re qualified to attend a Senior’s Bible Study? Our definition for Senior is this: You can attend a Bible Study at 10 AM on a Tuesday. If that’s you, you’re welcome to join us!
Sunday Night Bible Study Open House – October 2, 6:00 PM
We host an inductive (verse by verse, read and discuss) Bible study on Sunday nights. It’s a great group of people and a chance to read through an entire book of the Bible together. This night is marked as an open house because they’ll be starting a new book on October 2nd, and we’ll update this page letting you know which one, as soon as they choose it.

Children’s Church Open House – 9:30 AM September 18th
Children’s Church is offered every Sunday morning during the worship service. It is for K-3, and begins before the sermon starts (so the kids can be a part of the big group for the first half of the service). We offer great lessons for their age range, and the kiddos are back in church for the closing song. This program is optional, many families at our church use this program, and others opt to keep their little ones with them for the whole service.
5th Quarter Fellowship of Christian Athletes/NextGen Ministries, September 30 – after the game
A special event for Jr High and Sr High through the coordination of our own NextGen Ministries, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. After the home football game on September 30th we will host a 5th quarter at the church. It’s a great activity for our youth with games, snacks, and fellowship as well as a testimony from one of our Tri-Valley coaches.
NextGen Nerf Wars, October 1, 6:00-8:00 PM
This event is for K-3, and is a great time of fellowship and games for our elementary school students. NextGen special events like this are a great time to get to know the ministry leaders, and to meet new friends in the church community.
Spaghetti Supper, September 25, 4:30-7:00 PM
Hosted by our United Methodist Women, the Spaghetti supper is an annual fundraiser for mission and outreach (both at Downs UMC and to organizations outside of the church). It’s a great chance for a family meal (and a chance to browse the church-potluck-dessert-table). The recipe for the sauce is a homemade closely kept Downs UMC tradition. Join us for some great food and fellowship, and help support bringing hope and good news to new places!
Sewing Group “Make it and Take it – Handmade Bookmark”, September 26, 7:00 PM
This fun event, hosted by our sewing group, is a great chance to hear about the ministry, which prepares school bags, blankets, uniforms, and more for mission in concert with the Midwest Mission Distribution Center. On this fun night they’ll break out the fabric and machines and you’ll get a chance to make a bookmark/penholder of your own design! No sewing experience necessary, they’re happy to teach you.
